– THE STORY BEHIND THE PROJECT –
It all began when Mr. EUGENE CLARK himself reached out to me after discovering my work on his character BIG DADDY, from George A. Romero's film LAND OF THE DEAD. We had the opportunity to get in touch, as he was particularly interested in acquiring a bust to showcase at his conventions. He subsequently also honoured me by signing every certificate of authenticity for that edition.
Thanks to one of my customers, Mr. ALEXANDRE RATEL, a zombie fiction author and passionate admirer of Romero's universe, my work was then brought to the attention of another iconic actor from that world: Mr. JIM KRUT, who portrayed the legendary HELICOPTER ZOMBIE in George A. Romero's cult classic DAWN OF THE DEAD (also known as ZOMBIE), released in 1978.
Jim then contacted me to congratulate me on my work and suggested that I create a sculpture of his character for him to take along to his conventions.
You can imagine just how thrilled I was to be chosen by an actor from such an iconic film, one that played a big part in shaping my childhood. Needless to say, I happily accepted this amazing project!
– WHO IS THE HELICOPTER ZOMBIE? –
Despite his very brief screen appearance, this zombie has become an absolute horror icon, thanks to his particularly graphic and gruesome death, masterminded by the legendary TOM SAVINI.
The scene has since become truly iconic, even earning a place among the "TOP 8 ZOMBIE DEATHS IN FILM" and the "TOP 100 SCENES IN HORROR FILM HISTORY".
If the "Helicopter Zombie" is only familiar to the most dedicated horror fans, there's a good reason for that.
The scene only appears in Romero's original US version of the film and was unfortunately cut from the shortened European theatrical cut edited by DARIO ARGENTO.
In Europe, the film was also released under the title "ZOMBIE". This should not be confused with Lucio Fulci's similarly titled film released in 1979, which is actually known as "ZOMBIE 2". During its production, that film indirectly evolved into a prequel to Romero's film, exploring the origins of the outbreak.
